The Appeal

Garrett Webb’s content formula was straightforward and effective: identify a complicated tax concept, explain it in plain English in under three minutes, and end with a call to book a consultation with his firm, Webb Financial Advisory.

His most popular video — 4.3 million views — explains how to deduct a new SUV as a business expense using Section 179 of the tax code. The strategy is legal under specific circumstances. The video omits the specific circumstances.

The Strategies

GripeNation reviewed 12 of Webb’s most-shared tax strategy videos with a licensed CPA who specializes in IRS controversy work. The assessment: several of the strategies presented are technically legal but presented in ways that encourage misapplication; two involve deduction structures that the IRS has specifically identified as abusive tax shelters.

The most problematic involved a “home office deduction” strategy that Webb described as applicable to anyone who “does any work from home” — a significant misstatement of the exclusivity requirements under IRS rules.

The Clients

Webb’s firm, Webb Financial Advisory LLC, prepared returns for an estimated 3,000 clients between 2022 and 2025. IRS records obtained through a source confirm that at least 47 clients of the firm have received examination notices — an audit rate dramatically above the national average of roughly 0.4%.

GripeNation spoke with six Webb Financial clients who received examination notices. All described similar situations: they had applied deductions Webb recommended, the IRS disputed the deductions, and they faced back taxes, interest, and in some cases penalties totaling between $8,000 and $31,000.

“He made it sound bulletproof,” said one client, a freelance designer. “He said hundreds of his clients had done this exact thing. When the IRS letter came, his office told me to hire my own attorney.”

The License Question

The state board of accountancy in Webb’s home state has confirmed it has received complaints and that a review of Webb’s CPA license is ongoing. His firm’s website still promotes a free 30-minute consultation.
